The speed of the Internet Cloud
The volume of data we use doubles every 18 months. An Intel firm called Gordon Moore has measured this figure. According to them, in 2018, the data usage will reach 8.6 zettabytes. A digit that has over 20 zeros.
The beginnings of the cloud- based computer science started by the end of the last century due to the development of some computing services. Actually, this concept dates back when J.C.R. Licklider and John McCarthy used the term of “cloud” as an Internet metaphor based on the cloud drawing that used to represent the telephone network and later on the same drawing used to simulate the Internet on computer network diagrams.
Like natural evolution of the generalized adoption of virtualization, the architecture oriented towards services and the counting usage; the cloud computing is sustained on the final users benefit. They do not need to understand how it works nor have control over the technological infrastructure of the cloud. They just need to use it for their own benefit.
The cloud computing has allowed others to process data without accessing remote servers to generate solutions in real time to their users. It represents a big step on the edge computing that helps analyze relevant data lot faster and from the main source. In turn, this reduces the data flow to data centers and certainly the final cost. This new way makes the ability of computing be much closer to the user and empowers him to use the technology as he wishes. In fact, it is the same technology being used on smart cities management, for instance to control the traffic and parking lots.
Another example of the use of distributed computing or edge computing is the mobile application. Today, all smart phones have the computing, storing, and network ability, so it offers more relevant information and more importantly in real time in order to make quick decisions to resolve a problem. The edge technology has already been applied in different items: Production line control, airport security permitting users to capture images and facial recognition of potential dangerous people in real time, etc.
Mobility such as the Internet of things (IOT) are the main drivers of edge computing. In fact, according to the projections of Scheneider Electric, a worldwide expert on managing energy and in more than 100 countries, he offers integral solutions to different market segments. There are currently around 14.000 million of interconnected devices (2 for every user), but in 2019 there will be over 180.000 million.
