ACROYOGA

The art of flying in balance

Acroyoga combines yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage. It is a group physical practice that mixes acrobatic skills and the benevolent touch of Thai massage, through yoga, starting from the group interaction, encouraging confidence, alignments, and body balances.

One of Acroyoga's pioneers was the master Krishnamacharya, who merged some arts and inspired Aerial Yoga. He traveled through India spreading his knowledge to other people, and finally, he created a tradition that came to life in the 80s, a time when many people continued with his legacy and also combined it with therapeutic arts, circus arts, and physical contact.

Acroyoga first steps began with the inclusion of Yoga in the Special Blend repertoire, in 1998. Then, the fusion of acrobatics, dance, and yoga was called Acroyoga in 1999, but it was until 2000 when Eugene Poku and Jessie Goldberg created the Acroyoga in Montreal. Finally, Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer started again what we now know as Acroyoga in California - United States, in 2003. This time, they merged the three elements mentioned: yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage.

It is a practice you do with another person through yoga poses or acrobatic movements, in which you'll play or interact with the other. It is about two people who merge, synchronize, feel and look at each other. That's why instructors say it's more like a dance, or even sex.

The group uses to do warm-up and stretching together. People who directly interact are called base and flyer. The base is the individual who is often lying on the ground and supports the flyer, the above person. Normally, because of weight and strength, the bases are usually men and women are flyers, although it may be the other way around. There is also the spotter role whose objective is to avoid possible falls. It is difficult to hurt yourself when falling, but often people are insecure at first.
