However, the sunflower gives off happiness and balance. Its scientific name, Helianthus, comes from the Greek “helios”, which means Sun, and “anthos”, flower. Maybe that is why it has the capacity to always look towards the sun, taking full advantage of the photosynthesis process and adding warmth, light and brightness to any shadowy space. The nineteenth-century Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh, sought inspiration in sunflowers. A collection that was enough to immortalize them. It has a strong stem, large oval-shaped leaves and a big flower, like a large daisy. Its origin dates to 3,000 years BC, where the New Mexico and Arizona indigenous tribes cultivated it for food purposes. Then, the Spaniards took the plant to Europe for ornamental purposes, mainly for its colors, freshness and beauty. It is in the nineteenth century when started the oil extracting from the sunflower seed in Russia. It belongs to the daisy, cineraria and dahlia’s family. Its large golden petals follow the sun path and its fruit is a small ovoid and elongated grain that provides important nutrients to the diet, which help and strengthen the immune system. The sunflower can be plant in any land because it can survive in arid terrain, although for a spectacular production a moist and moveable terrain is better. Therefore, even though in the Dominican Republic it is produced in different areas of the country, it is mostly planted in Constanza, par excellence the region dedicated to horticulture and floristry. The gardens and greenhouses located at different heights and climatic zones are a paradise of colors, textures and smells where each variety grows and multiplies at its own pace. Resistant to almost any temperature, except frost, the plant needs abundant watering during its growth and flowering, but always avoiding water stagnation. Its size can reach two meters. The natural sunflowers tones include yellow, orange, red, ocher and brown. Some sunflower varieties have a diameter of 8 to 14 inches; in others, it varies from 4 to 10 inches. To avoid the flower folding because of its weight and making it look sad and crestfallen, you must reinforce the stem with sticks and tape or wires.
